Telephone Wire Baskets-Square
(556)
The Zulu tribe is the largest tribe in South Africa and has long been recognized for the mastery of basket making from native plants and grasses. And now, the Urban Zulu have taken the art form to new heights by applying it to a new medium: recycled telephone wire. They are bright, washable and sturdy. The designs and colors are simply incredible. As the story goes, the first recycled, plastic-coated wire baskets came from security workers on the graveyard shift in South African factories. To pass the time, they started to wind and weave brightly-colored bits of telephone wire around their nightsticks. And from there, a now internationally recognized art form began. Beauty and function both meet with these wonderful baskets. Please use them—for candy, jewelry, snacks, whatever needs a place for keeping. They are easy to clean with warm soapy water. 6 and 1/4 across, 2 and 1/2 inches high.
